The Ketogenic Diet (Dr. Joseph Mercola, trained in traditional and natural medicine) just released information about the ketogenic diet and how he says it can starve cancer. I was excited to read this since I have been using a ketogenic diet plan in my office for over 10 years. The plan calls for eliminating high glycemic carbohydrates — those carbohydrates that convert to sugar rapidly — and replacing them with healthy fats and protein.

The average female will lose 12-18 pounds of body fat in a 5-week period and men lose an average of 18-25 pounds. Unlike other diet plans, the ketogenic diet does not just reduce calories. It is balanced with healthy carbohydrates such as green vegetables, healthy fats and protein.

My clients have greater success at keeping this weight off over time because it is not as restrictive as many others out there. A ketogenic diet utilizes fat stores for energy and protects muscle mass. I have also had positive outcomes with clients who suffer from seizures and other complicated health issues.

Now there is published research showing how a ketogenic diet can affect cancer cells. It is a fact that cancer cells need glucose to thrive, and the body turns carbohydrates into glucose. Cutting out carbs literally starves the cancer cells. CBN News says what we’re doing to fight cancer is simply not working. Prevention is key if we ever want to reduce the growing incidence of cancer.

  • Always remember your food choices should be at the top of your list to improve your overall health. Eliminating processed foods and soft drinks may not prevent cancer. But they are loaded with carbs that turn into fuel for cancer cells.
  • Carbs raise your insulin and leptin levels. Keeping these in check is beneficial for cancer prevention and all other illnesses.
  • Processed foods usually contain trans fats and can be genetically modified – both can be contributors to cancer.

Focus now on a more structured food plan for you and your family. Replace high glycemic carbs with moderate amounts of high quality protein and high amounts of beneficial fat. You’ll go from carb burning mode to fat burning. Not only will you be healthier, you will be leaner too!
