There’s a big reason why plant-based 🌿foods are excellent for your gut and brain – beyond their vitamin and minerals content… … it’s because they contain special fibers that our gut bugs just love! And when your gut bugs are happy, your body is happy has well! Bacteroidetes and firmicutes are some of the more dominant bacterial strains found in the gut, and they munch on something called microbiota-accessible carbohydrates (or MACs for short). So instead of reaching for that Big Mac, reach for some plant-based MACs from foods like kale, cauliflower, carrots, garlic, and onion just to name a few. MACs are resistant to our human digestive enzymes but are digestible by enzymes that gut microbes produce. They include things you might have heard of like resistant starch, non-starch polysaccharides, and oligosaccharides.
