HELP! I’m Confused About Probiotics! 🤷‍♀️

✨ There’s a lot of info out there about probiotics… but unfortunately, lots of products just don’t work and I don’t want you to waste your time or your money!

First off, probiotics contain one or more microorganisms to restore beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract.

✨ If you have GI issues, probiotic supplements can help restore a healthy gut barrier and gut flora population along with additional changes in diet, sleep and other lifestyle habits.

Gut bacteria are in charge of manufacturing important nutrients including Vitamin K, folate, and other important B vitamins.  If done right, probiotics can boost the balance of microorganisms, reducing the number of pro-inflammatory bacteria like E. Coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae.

✨ Just like food labels, you’ll want to know your way around a probiotic label: When looking at a probiotic label, you will probably see these terms: genus, species, and strain.

An example of two: Lactobacillus (genus) acidophilus (species)

When you see only two, that means they have only provided the species, not the strain of probiotic being used.

And when you see three, like Bacillus Subtilis HU58, you’re getting more information about the strain.

✨ Is more better? When using probiotics, remember it’s only a tiny amount compared to what’s already there… trillions of bacteria.  Quantity does not always correlate to quality. Better to look for diversity of probiotic strains, some brands have six or more.

The way you tell the difference between these two kinds of bacteria is that only spore strains begin with the word “Bacillus.” If a strain listed on a label begins with anything else, it is one of the non-spore, more fragile bacteria and can die easily in the bottle on the shelf.

✨ Want to know which probiotic is right for your particular healing needs? How do we know which strains to use for which circumstances? It all depends on what you are going through currently and what your tests say about your gut health.

There are individual studies on specific strains used for specific purposes like L. casei for RA or strains for ulcer causing H. pylori for example, or  L rhamnosus, gasseri, and plantarum for weight loss.
